US News ranks the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing #1 in the country. This 65,000 square foot renovation and addition transforms a tight, circuitous plan and unwelcoming spaces into a visually and physically connected experience for students, faculty and staff. It features a ground floor “hub” that connects the two main entrances and activates all the spaces by providing ample daylight via a double-height glazing, clear visual connections between spaces and warm materiality that invites students and faculty to study and interact in an open, flexible plan. Additionally, the double-height “Study Cube” prominently facing Johns Hopkins Hospital, features a flexible classroom, double-height study space and an innovative double-skin curtain wall.
While at William Rawn Associates, Sophia developed design studies, including drawings and renderings, focusing on key elements such as the double-height study cube, the ‘hub’ linking both entrances, and the building facade. She also collaborated with architects, consultants, and engineers on construction drawings, contributing to architectural solutions in institutional design.
